Redhead surfer Col Smith Scrapbook

Various photos of Redhead’s Col Smith from his surfing career.

Col Smith was Australian Champion and placed in 3 Hawaiian Contests in 1976.

Col helped pioneer Channel Bottom Surfboards, first surfing Jim Pollard’s boards with the rolled edge “corrugated” style, then with Martin Littlewood Delta Designs making the hard edged Clinker channels, Col went on to making his own boards and also worked with other board builders, mostly shaping 6 channels with “Bee” tails.

Saturday morning 22/10/11 around 7:30 am. The surf was very ordinary at 2 foot with a light onshore starting up, but it was the best place to be to
watch the local dolphins throw a party. Dozens of dolphins gathered
just outside the break in what appeared to be an introduction of the
new young  calves to the extended dolphin clan. The young ones were
accompanied by adults as they cruised around and around, meanwhile
the young adults cavorted further out getting some serious air. They
threw some awsome stale fish moves but without grabbing a rail. They
stayed for almost an hour in the same area while the few surfers out
watched in awe a few metres away.

Rock bands touring Newcastle in the1970s

Cold Chisel first came up to Newcastle in the late
1970’s and played at the local southern pubs and clubs the
Orana, Belmont Sporties, Mawson, Swansea Workers and went on to bigger
things quick. They always played their guts out and got a big Newcastle
following. great guys too. Ian Moss wowed us with guitar, Jimmy Barnes
revved the crowds, Don Walker’s songs made us listen and the beat was
held by Phil and Steve.

Jimmy and the boys were outrageous and played great
stuff. Ignatious was a showman and always up to mischief to say the
least. Rumours were he left a lot of gigs in the roadies gear boxes.

Surfing in New Zealand 1979

New Zealand’s North Island in January 1978 had excellent surf and good weather as the following photos show. The NZ people were friendly and helpful and made my
short stay there a memorable one. Locals picked me up if I was
hitching, took me surfing, to the pub and put me up. The beaches
were unspoilt and beautiful.

Driving down the road to this point you are welcomed by a view of one of the best set ups you could imagine.New Zealand 1978 Whale Bay
